Distance Measuring Sensors
Distance Measuring Sensors (short DMS) contain an IR emitter (IR LED), a sensor (Position Sensitive Detector (PSD) or CMOS Image Sensor) as well as a signal processing unit.
In contrary to proximity sensors, DMS can measure an actual distance value by utilizing the triangulation method. In this method, the incident angle of the reflected light is used to calculate the distance rather than the portion of the reflected light. The closer an object moves towards the sensor, the bigger the incident angle of the light towards the detector is. This method is more complex, but much more accurate, as the incident angle is almost independent from the objects surface property.

Ambient Light Sensors
Ambient Light Sensors are photodetectors, which’s spectral response is similar to the one of human’s eyes. Therefore it is possible to measure the light intensity similarly as it is sensed by the human eyes.

Dust Sensors
Dust sensors also contain an IR emitter (LED) and a detector and are able to measure particle concentration in the air. The emitter and detector are arranged diagonally, with a slit in the middle where air can pass through. If no particle is in the slit, the detector receives almost no light from the emitter. As soon as particles penetrate into the slit, the light from the emitter is diffused and received by the detector. With increasing particle concentration, the amount of light which is received by the detector also increases, which will then be forwarded as an equivalent output voltage. The dust sensor can only detect a relative change of the particle concentration referenced to a calibration condition.

Proximity Sensors
A proximity sensor contains an Infrared emitter (short IR, usually 850nm or 940nm), a receiver as well as the control logic. The function principle is simple: The emitter transmits IR light. Approaching objects are reflecting the IR light back towards the receiver which forwards the signal to the control logic, which by then detects the presence of the object. Typical applications are hand dryers or automatic water faucets.
